"Recovery Skills" are

the key to Assertiveness

Assertive Recovery Skills.png

"What if you ask a stupid question and get laughed at? How would you handle it?"

Most likely, a passive person can’t answer that question.

Why? Because passive individuals only think about avoiding getting attacked. They focus so much on prevention that they fail to consider what to do after something bad occurs.

In other words:

  • What passive individuals desire: The power and methods to prevent failure.

  • What passive individuals need: The power and methods to recover from failure (recovery skills).

Unfortunately, no matter how well-prepared you are, the unexpected is unavoidable.

Assertiveness is most needed when something you are not prepared for occurs, which happens frequently in global meetings. During live discussions, it’s very hard to predict who will say what and when.

To deal with unforeseen challenges or opportunities, you need not only meeting preparation but also recovery skills. Recovery skills are about restoring your emotions, to enable yourself to recover from feelings of discouragement and emotional turmoil after things go wrong.

If you believe every mistake is irreparable (equivalent to death), you become passive because it feels like silence is the only safe option (safer than speaking and making an error that will last forever).

Conversely, if you know that you can bounce back from failure, you realize that speaking up or asking questions (i.e., assertive actions) carries less risk. Truly understanding this comes from experiencing that you won’t die from failure and that you can regain emotional stability after emotional disruption.

Whether your team members can emotionally recover from mistakes affects not only their contribution to subsequent discussions but also the overall atmosphere of the team.

BEMi programs focus on building better recovery skills to handle all types of challenging and unexpected meeting situations
